Large format wall art: which size for which wall

Reading time: 7 min

A large wall is not decorated like a small wall, only bigger. Past a certain surface it stops being a question of taste and becomes one of proportion: a 30 × 40 cm print in the middle of a three-metre wall does not look understated, it looks forgotten. And that is where most of the hesitation at checkout comes from — people choose the image first, then guess the size, and it is the size that decides the result.

Here is how to choose a large format without getting it wrong, and where “large” really begins in wall art.

At what size does large format begin?

There is no official definition. In practice the tipping point sits around A1: below it, a print hangs almost anywhere; above it, the print forces you to think about the whole wall around it.

  • 30 × 40 cm and A2 (42 × 59.4 cm) — supporting sizes. A console, a hallway, a multi-piece composition.
  • 50 × 70 cm — the most versatile size. It holds its own above a piece of furniture without crowding the room.
  • A1 (59.4 × 84.1 cm) — the first genuinely large format. It becomes the anchor of the room.
  • 61 × 91 cm — close to A1 but wider. Useful when the wall is wider than it is tall.
  • 70 × 100 cm — our largest size. It stands alone and does not take kindly to company.

Going from 50 × 70 to A1 almost doubles the visible surface. That is the gap people underestimate most: on screen the two images look alike, on the wall they do not play the same role.

The two-thirds rule, and why it comes before budget

The most useful measurement is not the size of the wall, it is the width of the furniture below it.

A single print above a sofa, a sideboard or a headboard should span roughly two thirds of that furniture's width. A 220 cm sofa therefore calls for about 145 cm of width — impossible with one image, so it becomes a trio. A 150 cm sideboard calls for around 100 cm: a 70 × 100 cm hung horizontally, or an A1 vertically with a little breathing room.

On a wall with no furniture the rule changes: there you work from eye level and lateral breathing space. We covered that case separately in decorating a large empty wall.

What to remember: a size that is too small can never be rescued. Not by a thicker frame, not by better hanging, not by a second print beside it. Whereas a size that is slightly too large, in a bright room, almost always works.

What each size actually costs

Our prints are made to order on 189 gsm matte paper, 0.26 mm thick with 94 % opacity. The price follows the surface:

  • 30 × 40 cm — €39 as a poster, €89 in a solid oak frame
  • A2 (42 × 59.4 cm) — €49 as a poster, €119 framed
  • 50 × 70 cm — €59 as a poster, €179 framed
  • A1 (59.4 × 84.1 cm) — €99 as a poster, €199 framed
  • 61 × 91 cm — €119 as a poster, €219 framed
  • 70 × 100 cm — €139 as a poster

Shipping is free from €49: from A2 upwards, the question no longer arises.

Large format does not mean any image

This is the point few shops state plainly. An enlarged image reveals what a small format forgives: noise in the shadows, the transitions in gradients, the sharpness of edges.

In practice, two families of image carry very large formats well:

  • Architecture — arches, doorways, staircases. Clean lines stay crisp, and the scale of the subject matches the scale of the wall.
  • Materials — travertine, limestone, plaster. The grain becomes the subject; the bigger the better.

Conversely, a fine silhouette or a single branch on a pale background can look empty at 70 × 100 cm. That is not a fault in the image, it is a mismatch between subject and surface.

Le Repos du Vase — a centred object, dense enough to stand alone at A1 as well as at 61 × 91 cm.

Poster or framed, as the size grows

At small sizes the choice is aesthetic. At large sizes it becomes structural too.

An unframed 70 × 100 cm poster ripples if it is fixed only at the corners: it needs a frame, a magnetic hanger or glass. An A1 in a solid oak frame, by contrast, arrives ready to hang and stays perfectly flat — but it has weight, and the fixing must suit the wall.

Our solid oak frame is assembled and delivered ready to hang. The full comparison of the two options is in poster or oak frame: how to choose.

Not every image goes up to every size

This is worth checking before you confirm a basket. Depending on the original image and its resolution, some prints stop at 50 × 70 cm while others offer A1, 61 × 91 cm and 70 × 100 cm.

The list of available sizes appears directly on each product page. If a size is missing it is not an oversight: it would not have held the print quality we want.

The mistakes you regret when the parcel arrives

  • Choosing the size on budget — the most common one. A print too small for its wall costs €39 and will never satisfy; the same image at A1 costs €99 and settles the wall for ten years.
  • Forgetting the ceiling height — a vertical 70 × 100 cm in a room with a 2.40 m ceiling crushes the wall. Below 2.50 m, go horizontal.
  • Measuring the wall instead of the furniture — the reference is whatever sits below.
  • Hanging too high — the centre of the print belongs 145-150 cm from the floor, whatever its size. A large format hung too high looks like it is floating.
  • Choosing a large format for too fine a subject — see above: the scale of the motif must follow the scale of the paper.

FAQ — Large format wall art

What is the largest size available at Cassili-home?

70 × 100 cm, as a poster. This size is not offered on every image: it depends on the resolution of the original file. The available sizes are listed on each product page.

What size of print above a sofa?

Aim for roughly two thirds of the sofa's width. For a sofa of 180 to 200 cm, a horizontal 70 × 100 cm or a trio of 30 × 40 cm. For a sofa of 220 cm and up, a composition is almost always better than a single print — the method is set out in choosing three prints that work together.

Does an XXL poster warp without a frame?

Yes, if it is fixed only at the corners. Beyond A1, plan for a frame, a magnetic hanger or glass. Our solid oak framed prints arrive assembled and ready to hang.

What is the difference between A1 and 61 × 91 cm?

A1 measures 59.4 × 84.1 cm; 61 × 91 cm is slightly larger and, above all, proportionally wider. On a wall that is wider than it is tall, 61 × 91 cm sits better; in a classic vertical format, A1 is enough.

Is shipping free on large formats?

Yes. It is free from €49 per order, so on every one of our sizes from A2 upwards. Prints are made to order and shipped within 7 to 10 days, in a rigid tube for the large formats.
