The staircase wall is the largest wall in the house, and often the barest. You walk past it every day, going up, coming down, arms full or in a hurry. A well-chosen print turns it into a gallery you pass through slowly. Stone staircases, limewashed steps, arches and golden light: here are our prints designed to dress a staircase wall.
Our staircase prints
Why a staircase calls for wall art
A staircase wall is seen on the move and at an angle, never head-on. That is what makes it so particular: a single large image gives the climb a destination, while a series of three identical sizes keeps pace with your steps. Either way, the staircase stops being a mere passageway.
Which subjects to choose
The most fitting choice is often the most literal: a staircase on the staircase. A receding perspective of steps extends the climb and adds depth to a flat wall. Arches and passageways have the same effect (Architecture collection). On a staircase that is often dark, favour pale tones — ivory, lime, sand — that catch the light (ivory wall art, beige and sand wall art).
Sizes, height and method
For a straight flight, three prints of the same size set on a diagonal, each measured from its own step. For the landing, a single large-format piece (large-format selection). The full method — height, slope, turning staircases, mistakes to avoid — is set out in our guide decorating a staircase wall. Frequently asked questions
What size for a staircase wall? 50 × 70 cm or A2 for a series of three running up the stairs; a large format, A1 or 61 × 91 cm, for the landing wall, which is seen from afar.
How high should you hang them? The centre of each print 145 to 150 cm above the nosing of the step directly below it. Repeated for each frame, this measurement gives a line parallel to the slope.
Framed or as a poster? Framed, ideally: you brush against the walls of a staircase, and a frame protects the paper. Depending on the print, a black, white or solid oak frame.
Lead times and shipping? Printed to order, delivered in 7 to 10 days. Free shipping from €49.
