Olive Tree Wallpaper: Bringing In the Shade of a Southern Garden

Reading time: 4 min

The olive tree is the most recognisable tree of the Mediterranean, and one of the easiest to live with in a home. Its foliage is fine, grey-green, never overpowering. On a wall, it does not shout: it brings in the shade of a southern garden, even in a bedroom with no view.

Why the olive tree works so well on a wall

A dense botanical pattern — jungle, tightly packed palms — quickly overwhelms a room. The olive tree does the opposite: its branches are spaced out, its leaves small, and light passes between them. It is this emptiness that makes the design soothing. You can look at it for a long time without tiring of it.

It is also a design that works well in very light tones. An olive tree shadow on a limewash or ivory background stays legible while keeping the room bright.

Shadow, branch or whole tree: three ways to show it

  • The cast shadow — the silhouette of an olive tree projected onto a pale wall. This is the softest version, almost abstract. Ideal behind a bed.
  • The branch or sprig — a close-up, more graphic. It suits narrower walls, an entrance, a stretch of wall between two windows.
  • The whole tree — a true landscape, for a large living room or dining room wall.

Which room

The bedroom

This is the room where the olive tree feels most at home. Hung behind the bed, it dresses the whole headboard wall, and its calm suits a room for rest. Choose the palest versions and the shadows.

The living room

On the wall behind the sofa, a whole olive tree acts as a large window onto a garden. Pair it with linen, light wood and terracotta.

The dining room

An olive tree behind a wooden table recalls meals in the shade of a terrace. Here, a warmer version, at sunset or copper-toned, warms up the room in the evening.

Which colours to pair it with

The surrounding walls: off-white, limewash, sand. Textiles: natural linen, ecru, a touch of sage green or terracotta. Wood: light oak or, of course, olive wood. What to avoid: a strong green on the other walls, which overwhelms the delicate grey-green of the foliage.
