Mediterranean Wallpaper Murals: Arches, Olive Trees, Stone
Reading time: 5 min
A poster dresses a wall. A wallpaper mural makes it disappear. Where there was a flat partition, there is now an arch, the shadow of an olive tree, a veined stone running from one corner to the other. It is the most direct way to bring the Mediterranean into a room — provided you choose the right design for the right wall.
What makes a Mediterranean mural work is not the amount of sunshine in the image. It is restraint: shades of sand, limewash and ivory, soft light, a design that breathes.
Mural or repeat-pattern wallpaper: the difference
A classic wallpaper repeats the same pattern endlessly. A mural tells a single image, divided into panels: each panel carries a unique piece of the scene. The result: no repeated pattern, and an image at the scale of the whole wall.
Made to measure goes further: the wallpaper is printed to the exact dimensions of your wall. You choose the framing of the design, and nothing is cut in the wrong place.
Three Mediterranean themes
Arches and architecture
Arches in a row, colonnades, vaults: these are the designs that open up a wall the most. A perspective of arches creates a depth the room does not have, exactly like a real niche or window recess.

Best kept for walls you see head-on: the wall behind a sofa, behind a bed, at the end of a dining room. See the arch & architecture wallpaper selection.
Olive trees and botanicals
The shadow of an olive tree on a limewashed wall is the very image of a Mediterranean summer. Botanical designs are softer than arches: they do not open up the wall, they bring it to life. They suit bedrooms and rooms where you want calm.

Stone: travertine, onyx, sandstone
Stone effects are the most architectural designs without being figurative. A travertine wall gives you the texture of a southern house without the building work; a honey onyx warms up a dining room. They are also the easiest designs to live with day to day, because they tell no story: they set a mood.

A few designs to discover
Which wall to choose
- A single wall. A mural shows at its best on one wall, never on all four. The others stay plain, in an off-white or a sand that picks up a shade from the design.
- The wall you see as you walk in, or the one that serves as a backdrop: behind the sofa, the bed, the table.
- An uncluttered wall. A mural hidden behind a large wardrobe loses its point. A low console or a bench, on the other hand, sets it off.
Pairings that work
Light wood (oak, ash, rattan), linen, terracotta, matt ceramics: natural materials extend the image instead of competing with it. Avoid glossy lacquered furniture and saturated colours in front of a soft mural — they break the light of the design.
As for lighting, a warm light (2,700 K) does justice to sand and limewash tones. A cold light turns them grey.
